How we collect, use, and safeguard your personal data — and the rights you hold over it.

1. Who we are
Howden Research (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a student-led research publication producing analysis at the intersection of STEM, economics, and finance. We are the “data controller” responsible for your personal data as described in this statement.
For any question about this statement or about how we handle your data, contact us at howdenresearch@hotmail.com.
2. What data we collect
We only collect personal data that you choose to give us, or that is necessary to run the website:
- Contact form. When you write to us we collect your first and last name, email address, optional affiliation, the subject of your enquiry, and your message.
- Newsletter / subscriptions. If you subscribe, we collect your email address so we can send you updates you have asked for.
- Technical & usage data. Our hosting provider and privacy-focused analytics record limited technical information (such as approximate region, device/browser type, and pages viewed) to keep the site secure and understand aggregate readership. This data is not used to identify you personally.
We do not knowingly collect data from children, and we do not collect special category (sensitive) personal data.
3. How and why we use your data
We use your data only for the purposes for which it was provided:
- To respond to your enquiries and correspond with you.
- To send newsletters or updates you have subscribed to.
- To operate, secure, and improve the website and understand aggregate readership.
- To comply with legal obligations where applicable.
Our lawful bases under the UK GDPR are your consent (e.g. subscribing to updates), our legitimate interests in responding to enquiries and maintaining a secure, functioning website, and legal obligation where the law requires it. You may withdraw consent at any time.
4. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with trusted service providers who process it on our behalf, under contract, to deliver the website:
- Vercel — website hosting and privacy-focused analytics.
- Sanity — content management and secure storage of subscriber emails.
- Resend — delivery of contact-form messages and emails to our team.
Some providers may process data outside the UK/EEA. Where they do, appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) are in place to protect your data.
5. How long we keep it
We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected. Enquiry correspondence is retained while it remains relevant and then deleted. Subscriber emails are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove them. Aggregate analytics data is retained in non-identifying form.
6. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
- ask us to erase your data (“right to be forgotten”);
- restrict or object to our processing of your data;
- request a copy of your data in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time where we rely on it.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at howdenresearch@hotmail.com. We will respond within one month.
7. Cookies & analytics
We use privacy-focused analytics that do not use tracking cookies to identify you individually. We do not use advertising or third-party marketing cookies. Any strictly necessary cookies exist only to keep the site working. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
8. Complaints
If you have a concern about how we handle your data, please contact us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
9. Changes to this statement
We may update this statement from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised “last updated” date above.
